How trial and usage work
Your trial is 14 days or 40 minutes, whichever runs out first. After that, minutes are the only thing you're metered on — here's exactly how they're counted.
The trial
14 days or 40 minutes of calls, whichever comes first. A card is required to start, but nothing is charged during the trial.
40 minutes is close to Starter's 50, on purpose — the trial is meant to feel like the smallest real plan rather than an unlimited demo that sets an expectation the paid product can't meet.
Reading the usage gauge
The arc gauge on your Dashboard is the one number worth watching. During a trial it shows:
- Your 40 trial minutes as the total, and how much you've used
- Bonus minutes, if support has added any to your account
- A countdown — "12 days left in your free trial"
- A Manage Billing button
There's no overage line during a trial, because a trial account structurally can't run up overage. Once the trial ends the gauge switches to its normal form — included, bonus, used and overage — with nothing for you to change.
How minutes are counted
Calls are billed in whole minutes, rounded up per call. A 25-second call uses one minute. A 70-second call uses two.
This is rounded per call, not summed and rounded at the end, so twenty short calls use twenty minutes. It's standard telecom practice, and it fairly accounts for the fixed cost of setting up each call.
Test calls don't count
The 15 minutes a month of browser test calls are tracked in a completely separate pool. They never touch your included minutes, never trigger overage, and never draw on bonus minutes. Experiment freely.
When your usage resets
Roughly every 30 days, from when you signed up — not on the first of the month. Your gauge shows where you are in the current period.
If you run out of trial minutes before day 14
Your agent stops taking new calls immediately and callers hear a short message. You get an email and a banner explaining what happened.
Two options:
- Wait. Your subscription still starts on day 14 as scheduled. You just have a paused agent until then.
- Start your plan early. From Billing, one button ends the trial now, charges your chosen plan, and unlocks its full minutes straight away.
If you hit 40 minutes in the first week, that's useful information: 50 minutes on Starter probably isn't enough for your call volume.
What happens on day 14
Your card is charged automatically for the plan you picked at signup, your subscription becomes active, and minutes reset to that plan's full allowance. Nothing to click.
Cancel before day 14 from Billing and you're not charged at all.
After the trial: running out of minutes
Once you're on a paid plan, hitting your included minutes has one of two outcomes, depending on a single setting:
- Overage off (the default) — new calls are declined with a short message until your period resets or you upgrade.
- Overage on — calls keep being answered and extra minutes are billed at your plan's rate.
With overage off, you'll get a nudge on the gauge once you pass 75% of your minutes, pointing at that setting. See Turning overage on or off.
